Modal Launches Integration with Anthropic Claude Managed Agents Using Sandboxes

Modal announced a collaboration with Anthropic on May 19, 2026, to integrate Modal Sandboxes with Claude Managed Agents for self-hosted tool calls. The integration lets developers run agent tool execution in Modal's custom container runtime while keeping Anthropic's managed agent loop separate. Modal Sandboxes support fast cold-starts on custom images, volumes, snapshots, burst pricing with no minimum idle costs, connect tokens for network security, and scaling to 100,000 concurrent sandboxes. Andy Fang, co-founder of DoorDash, uses Claude and Modal to build AI agents for merchants including chat, voice, SMS, and browser workflows. Nima Ghamsari, co-founder and head of Blend, applies the combination for agent-assisted triage in banking workflows and plans to scale with Managed Agents.
