Zed Editor Reaches 1.0 Milestone With Rust Performance And AI Opt-Out

Zed Industries released version 1.0 of its code editor on April 29, 2026. Nathan Sobo and the team completed five years of development exceeding one million lines of Rust code to achieve native performance on macOS, Windows, and Linux. The editor now supports real-time collaboration via CRDT-based DeltaDB, parallel AI agents through the Agent Client Protocol, edit predictions at keystroke level, and a one-click toggle to disable all AI features. Hundreds of thousands of developers use Zed daily, and the company plans weekly releases plus a new Zed for Business tier with centralized billing and role-based access. Zed 1.0 marks the shift from early preview to a complete editor compared to prior Electron-based tools like Atom that imposed performance ceilings.
