OpenAI launched a research preview of Codex-1, a cloud-based SWE agent built on a fine-tuned o3 reasoning model with parallel tasking capabilities. The agent executes multiple development tasks independently on its own computer environment. Alexander Embiricos, head of OpenAI's Desktop & Agents team, presented the agent that outperforms prior OpenAI reasoning models on internal SWE tasks. OpenAI released the preview on May 16, 2025.
