DeepSeek finalized its first external funding round targeting up to $4 billion at a $50 billion valuation on May 16, 2026. The round is led by China's National Artificial Intelligence Industry Investment Fund, an $8.8 billion state-backed vehicle established in early 2025, with participation from China Integrated Circuit Industry Investment Fund (Big Fund III) and Tencent Holdings. DeepSeek released the 1.6-trillion-parameter V4 model on April 24, 2026, engineered with hybrid attention to cut inference compute to 27% and KV-cache memory to 10% of prior versions at full 1M-token context. The funding follows three weeks after the V4 launch and reverses DeepSeek's prior strategy of rejecting outside capital to fuel computing capabilities and employee benefits. China's National Artificial Intelligence Industry Investment Fund leads the round three weeks after DeepSeek's April 24 V4 release.
