Long Island Rail Road employees walked off the job Saturday May 16 2026 over a wage dispute shutting down the country’s busiest commuter railroad. The strike carried into Sunday with weekday commutes looming and no sign of movement in the talks. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul held a briefing on the strike and urged roughly 250000 commuters to work from home on Monday. The action marks the first LIRR walkout since 1994.
