AWS CEO Matt Garman stated Amazon is hiring as many software developers as ever in 2026 despite cutting 30,000 corporate roles since October 2025. The company extended offers to roughly 11,000 software engineering interns for the 2026 class. Recruiters now emphasize systems design, evaluation and AI tool fluency over pure algorithms in campus interviews. Garman noted that authoring a Java code snippet will be less valuable than wielding AI tooling and shipping products.
