Microsoft’s Israel chief departed on or before May 19, 2026 amid escalating ethical controversy over business relationships with the Israeli Ministry of Defense. The departure follows months of internal dissent and pressure after a Guardian report from August 2025 revealed Microsoft Azure services enabled mass surveillance and military targeting operations in Gaza. Microsoft suspended certain services in September 2025 following internal investigations into cloud and AI infrastructure use. EFF joined Access Now, Amnesty International, Fight for the Future and 7amleh in a joint May 7, 2026 letter urging release of investigation findings and suspension of relationships tied to human rights abuses. Allegations involve Azure cloud and AI services provided to Israeli military and intelligence units for processing large-scale surveillance data and supporting AI-assisted targeting systems during the Gaza war.
