Nouveau Monde Graphite Inc. held a groundbreaking ceremony in Saint-Michel-des-Saints, Quebec on May 19, 2026 to launch construction of the Phase-2 Matawinie mine. Eric Desaulniers, President and CEO, addressed attendees including Prime Minister Mark Carney, Quebec Minister Bernard Drainville, Atikamekw Chief Sipi Flamand, and Mayor Mario Venne. The project targets 106,000 tonnes average annual graphite production by end of 2028 after 31 months of construction and commissioning. Diversified commercial agreements with Panasonic Energy, Government of Canada, and Traxys North America cover more than 70 percent of expected output. A 13,000 tonnes per year battery material plant in Bécancour is planned with final investment decision in the second half of 2026 for Panasonic offtake, creating several hundred construction jobs and more than 300 operational jobs.
