Sen. Bill Cassidy finished third in the Louisiana Republican Senate primary on Saturday May 16 2026 with 24 percent of the vote. Representative Julia Letlow received 45 percent and state Treasurer John Fleming received 28 percent advancing to a June 27 runoff. Cassidy had been targeted by President Trump for his 2021 vote to convict Trump in the impeachment trial. Former Sen. Mitt Romney called Cassidy's defeat a loss for the country.
