Splunk Research Shows Global 2000 Downtime Costs Reach $600 Billion Annually

Cisco announced Splunk’s latest research on May 19, 2026, revealing aggregate unplanned downtime costs for Global 2000 companies reached $600 billion annually. The figure represents a 50% increase in two years, with average downtime at $15,000 per minute and 3.4% average shareholder value decline per incident. Lost revenue costs hit $95 million annually, nearly twice the 2024 level, alongside $40 million average ransomware payouts and $51 million average regulatory fines. Survey of 2,000 executives across 20 countries found 71% rate public data breach disclosure as very or prohibitively disruptive, up from 23% in 2024. Kamal Hathi, SVP and GM at Splunk, a Cisco company, stated downtime is inevitable but prolonged disruption is not.
