Nouveau Monde Graphite Inc. held a groundbreaking ceremony on May 19, 2026 in Saint-Michel-des-Saints, Quebec marking the official start of Phase-2 Matawinie mine construction attended by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Quebec Minister Bernard Drainville, Atikamekw Chief Sipi Flamand and local mayor Mario Venne. Construction and commissioning are expected to take approximately 31 months for full commercial production by end of 2028 targeting average annual output of 106,000 tonnes of graphite with offtake agreements covering more than 70 percent of expected production including Panasonic Energy, Government of Canada and Traxys North America. The project received national interest designation from the Government of Canada in November 2025 and aims for final investment decision in H2 2026 on a 13,000 tonnes per year battery material plant in Bécancour; it is positioned to become one of the largest integrated natural graphite production platforms in the G7.
