Kickstarter Apologizes and Reverts Mature Content Rules Citing Stripe Requirements

Kickstarter issued an apology on May 19, 2026 for rolling out overly restrictive mature content guidelines. The guidelines were driven by Stripe’s payment processor requirements. Stripe’s standards prohibit sexually explicit materials for sexual gratification. COO Sean Leow wrote “Honestly? We botched it” in the reversal announcement. Kickstarter will keep pushing Stripe for clarity while maintaining prohibitions on illegal content.
