Long Island Rail Road workers went on strike Saturday May 16 2026 after failing to reach a wage agreement. Five unions representing about half the workforce walked off the job shutting down North America's largest commuter rail system. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul pleaded with unions to resume bargaining on Sunday as the strike entered its second day. The National Mediation Board summoned LIRR unions and MTA management to meet in Manhattan on Day 2 of the strike.
