xAI Launches Grok Build Coding Agent Amid Growing Competition from Anthropic and OpenAI

xAI introduced Grok Build on May 15, 2026 as a new coding agent and CLI for professional software engineering and complex coding work. The early beta is restricted to SuperGrok Heavy subscribers paying $300 per month and will incorporate user feedback for improvements. The launch follows xAI’s February 2026 acquisition by SpaceX and more than 50 researcher and engineer departures since the merger. xAI updated image policies to restrict editing of real people in revealing clothing after generating around 3 million sexualised images including 23,000 involving children per a January CCDH report.
