Anthropic Hires OpenAI Co-Founder Andrej Karpathy for Claude Pretraining Team

Andrej Karpathy, who co-founded OpenAI and served as Tesla AI director leading computer vision for Autopilot from 2017 to 2022, joins Anthropic this week on the pretraining team for Claude models. Karpathy stated on X on May 19, 2026: "I think the next few years at the frontier of LLMs will be especially formative... I am very excited to join the team here and get back to R&D." Elon Musk recruited Karpathy from OpenAI to Tesla in 2017 and called him "arguably the #2 guy in the world in computer vision." Anthropic is poised to surpass OpenAI's private market valuation amid intensifying talent competition.
