Meta notified roughly 8,000 employees of job eliminations starting May 20, 2026 as part of a companywide restructuring. The cuts represent about 10 percent of Meta's approximately 78,865-person global workforce and occurred alongside the cancellation of around 6,000 open positions. Notifications began at 4 a.m. local time in Singapore and rolled out in batches across time zones including the US and UK. Mark Zuckerberg addressed employees in an internal memo stating success is not a given amid the shift to AI. The company also reassigned another 7,000 staff to new AI-focused teams such as Applied AI Engineering and Agent Transformation Accelerator under Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang.
