Harness Engineering Emerges as Fourth Paradigm of AI Engineering per OpenAI and Harness Report

Harness published The State of Engineering Excellence 2026 report on May 13, 2026, coinciding with the emergence of harness engineering as the fourth paradigm in AI engineering after prompt engineering, context engineering, and agent engineering. OpenAI's Ryan Lopopolo defined harness engineering in a February 11, 2026 post after shipping a production application with zero human-written code in a five-month experiment building a codebase of over one million lines across 1,500 pull requests authored by AI agents. Mitchell Hashimoto, HashiCorp co-founder, attributed the term with the principle that anytime an agent makes a mistake, engineers should create a solution so the agent never makes that mistake again. Trevor Stuart, SVP and General Manager at Harness, noted that AI coding is the first technology shift in modern software that has changed not just what developers build, but how they spend their hours, with the report showing 94% of leaders note untracked costs from AI adoption.
