Microsoft canceled licenses for Anthropic's Claude Code and directed engineers in its Experiences + Devices team to transition to GitHub Copilot CLI by the end of June 2026. The shift follows internal testing where staff preferred Claude Code but aligns with cost reduction ahead of the June 30 fiscal year end. Rajesh Jha, VP of experiences and devices, noted Copilot CLI supports Microsoft-specific repos, workflows, and security needs. Satya Nadella previously stated Microsoft writes up to 30% of its code using generative AI.
