South African Billionaire Patrice Motsepe Acquires SOLA Group Business Worth R20 Billion

Patrice Motsepe's African Rainbow Energy acquired a controlling stake in SOLA Group on May 12, 2026. The transaction increased ARE's stake from 41% to 83% over the R20 billion-plus renewables portfolio. SOLA Group is South Africa's largest corporate-serving Independent Power Producer. The acquisition creates the largest company of its kind in South Africa. ARE now controls one of the country's largest independent renewable energy platforms.
