Meta drops SAM3 open-source video segmentation model for real-time object tracking

Meta releases SAM 3, a unified foundation model for promptable segmentation and tracking of objects in images and videos, on March 27, 2026. The open-source release includes model checkpoints, evaluation datasets, and fine-tuning code on GitHub with updates in SAM 3.1 adding object multiplexing for up to 16 objects in one forward pass. In a May 19, 2026 demonstration video, SAM3 processes a Celtics vs Knicks NBA game to tag players by name and plot positions on a 2D map in real time. NBA teams previously paid Second Spectrum and Stats Perform between $1 million and $5 million per team per year for comparable tracking services.
