Meta instructed North American employees to work from home on May 20 as it prepared to notify staff of 10% global workforce cuts. Layoff emails arrived as early as 4AM for some workers amid the rollout of approximately 8,000 job reductions. The company simultaneously shifted 7,000 employees to new AI-related teams and eliminated managerial layers per a May 18 memo from Chief People Officer Janelle Gale. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated in the May 20 internal communication that no additional company-wide layoffs are planned for 2026.
