Elon Musk's SpaceXAI lost more than 50 researchers and engineers since the February 2026 merger with xAI. At least 11 employees defected to Meta and at least 7 joined Mira Murati’s Thinking Machines Lab. The pre-training team dwindled to a handful of people. Departures followed Juntang Zhuang's exit and two co-founders leaving earlier, amid reports of extreme work culture and unrealistic model training deadlines.
