Google announced the public preview of Gemini Code Assist for individuals on May 19, 2026. The free version provides up to 180,000 code completions per month to individual developers, students, hobbyists, freelancers and startups signing up with a personal Gmail account. Google claims the limit is 90 times higher than competitors' typical free tiers of around 2,000 completions. Developers can access the tool without a credit card for IDE integration, CLI and code review features. Google previously sold Gemini Code Assist only to businesses for about a year before expanding to free individual access.
