xAI Fails to Pay Employees $420 for Tax Return Training Data

Elon Musk's xAI asked employees earlier this year to submit their own tax returns as training data for Grok to improve tax capabilities ahead of the April 15, 2026 US tax deadline. The company promised $420 per participating employee. Payments had not materialized two months later as of May 18, 2026. xAI made the request during a broad overhaul while competing with Anthropic Claude and OpenAI ChatGPT for accounting tasks.
